Nikky Mantyla- Professor

Reflection of the Path Towards Critical Argumentative Writing Skills

Working on a blog site was a new challenge that had arised on my horizon. I never experienced it before and at first, I won't lie, I thought it would be difficult; yet the class set up and instructions made it easy and everything went better than I had originally imagined. Though argumentative writing is a difficult skill: Nikky made it easy to understand and gave thorough and helpful examples. I learned how to argue my point more effectively without having to offend others and also learned to create an understanding of other views. There were times when heated subjects which often led to debate could be turned and were seen as opportunities for each student to shine and explain the reasons behind their ways of thinking. It made it so that others would listen and learn, rather than to get defensive and completely ignore your writing.

Aside from learning how to argue my point, I also learned how to use better grammer skills which have led me to becoming a more fluent writer. The formatting of my pages differed depending on the theme or type of document I was creating. For instance in the instructions paper the formatting had to be bold and the words had to fit on the page better for easier reading. Overall I learned that even the letter formatting was critical to establishing a good site online.

The research behind the reports and the position paper were essential to keeping my audiences attention. I had to carefully chose my research and make sure that it was backed by good and credible sources which others could believe. There was no use of wikipedia or other biased based sources. At times I had to see the sponsering sites and use some sites that took into consideration both sides. It was a lot of work and research but overall I learned more in this single class than I had ever learned in an english class throughout college. It was fun and kept my attention. Thank you for being such an awesome professor and for truly caring about your profession.
